The Transgression of Values and the Chemistry of Forgiveness: A Comprehensive Literature Review of Moral Injury (MI), Treatment Modalities, Recovery and the Efficacy of Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy (PAT) for MI Symptom Reduction
Moral injury represents a profound psychological, behavioral, social, and spiritual crisis resulting from experiences that transgress deeply held moral beliefs and expectations. This report provides an exhaustive review of the current clinical understanding of moral injury (MI), distinguishing it from fear-based disorders like PTSD and clarifying its unique phenomenology rooted in shame, guilt, and social isolation.
This analysis examines the emerging role of psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) β utilizing MDMA, psilocybin, and ketamine β as a transformative intervention capable of modulating the neural correlates of self-referential shame. The report delineates the critical necessity of a robust psychosocial scaffolding, involving interdisciplinary co-facilitation by clinicians, chaplains, and certified peer specialists.
